About our ADHD Assessments

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in early childhood and affects how a person pays attention and controls their impulses. ADHD affects the brain’s executive functioning — and will affect a child's ability to self-regulate and control thoughts, words, actions and emotions. Often children and teenagers with ADHD find it hard to stay focused on tasks, follow instructions, or sit still for long periods. They might also act quickly without thinking or have trouble organizing their work. However, sometimes these same symptoms can be present with other conditions such as language disorders, specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, intellectual disabilities and more. A comprehensive assessment is required to determine whether the child's difficulties are due to ADHD or another condition.

It's important to remember that ADHD is not about being lazy or not trying hard enough—it's a real difference in how the brain works, and with the right support and strategies, kids with ADHD can learn to manage their symptoms and succeed in school and other activities.
